Welcoming Your Little One with Timeless Newborn Portraits

There’s nothing quite like those early days with your baby. Tiny fingers wrapped around yours, sleepy smiles, and the feeling that life has changed in the most wonderful way. These fleeting moments deserve to be preserved forever. Based in Farmington and serving families throughout the Hartford area, here at R Winkler Photography, I specialize in creating warm, natural portraits that reflect how life truly feels.

This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about planning your session, from understanding the benefits to preparing for your big day.

Why Professional Portraits Matter

Your newborn will only be this little once. Here’s why professional portraits matter:

Adorable newborn portrait

Freeze the Details. From wispy hair to delicate eyelashes and tiny toes, professional photographs capture the details a smartphone simply can’t. These aren’t just pictures, they’re a time capsule of your baby’s first days.

Celebrate Your Family’s Story. Whether it’s your first child or you’re welcoming a new sibling, these photos become a chapter in your family’s history. They document not just your baby, but the love, connection, and joy that fills your home during this special time.

Create Tangible Heirlooms. In our digital world, printed albums and wall art stand the test of time. They become family treasures, passed down to children and grandchildren.

Professional Quality – Expert lighting, composition, and editing create images that stand the test of time. Unlike casual snapshots, professional portraits are crafted with intention and artistry.

When to Schedule Your Session

Timing is one of the most common questions parents have when planning their session.

The Ideal Window: Days 7-14

For newborn photography in Farmington and Hartford, the best time is typically within the first 7–14 days of life. In this window:

  • Babies are sleepier and more naturally curled up
  • Baby acne and newborn rashes are less prominent
  • The transition from womb to world is still fresh, so natural poses come more easily

Booking Your Session in Advance

I recommend reaching out during your second trimester to reserve your spot and plan for your due date. Don’t worry if your baby arrives early or late. I keep my schedule flexible to accommodate your little one’s actual arrival.

What If You Miss the Window?

It’s okay! Every baby is different, and beautiful portraits can be made at any stage. Whether your baby is three weeks old or three months old, we can still create stunning images. Older babies bring their own charm, with alert eyes, social smiles, and emerging personalities that make for equally precious photographs.

Choosing Your Photography Style

At R Winkler Photography, I offer two distinct approaches to fit your family’s vision and lifestyle.

At Home Newborn  Sessions

On Location sessions take place in your home and offer:

  • At-home comfort and familiarity
  • Authentic moments in your baby’s everyday environment
  • Natural light, relaxed and documentary style
  • Great if you have older children or want a less formal feel

On Location sessions are perfect for families who value authenticity and want to remember exactly how life felt during those early days at home.

Studio Sessions

Studio sessions provide a controlled, comfortable environment with:

  • Climate-controlled, quiet, and safe for baby
  • Professional lighting, curated props and accessories
  • Timeless, classic setups in neutral tones
  • The convenience of stepping into a calm studio. No home cleanup required.

What to Expect During Your Session

Each session is designed to be gentle, safe, and relaxed for both baby and parents. Here’s what a typical experience looks like.

Before We Begin

When you arrive (or when I arrive at your home), we’ll review what we’ve discussed about your vision to ensure we’re still on the same page.

The Flow of the Session

  • Baby-led posing: I never force poses. We follow your baby’s cues, ensuring safety and comfort.
  • Family involvement: Some of the most meaningful photos include parents, siblings (and even pets, if you’d like).
  • Multiple setups: We’ll move through different looks, including various fabrics, poses, and backdrops.
  • Session length: Typically 2–3 hours, which is ample time for feeding, soothing, and breaks, if needed.

What Happens When Baby Fusses?

It’s completely normal. I will gently soothe with white noise, warm blankets and breaks as needed. Some babies photograph beautifully while wide awake. Those bright eyes and curious expressions are just as precious as sleeping poses.

Preparing for Your Newborn Session

A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a smooth, successful session.

What to Do Before Your Session

Feed your baby right before we begin to help them be calm and content.

Keep the baby awake for about an hour before the session starts to encourage deep sleep once it begins.

Warm the car if traveling to a studio so the baby stays cozy.

Remove tight clothing about 30 minutes before the session and wrap in a soft blanket instead.

What to Bring

  • Extra diapers, wipes, and burp cloths
  • Feeding supplies (bottles, nursing cover if desired)
  • Pacifier if your baby uses one
  • Any special items you’d like to include (heirloom blankets, stuffed animals, etc.)
  • A change of clothes for yourself (in case of baby accidents). If you forget, don’t worry! I provide a client closet stocked with outfits for moms, dads, and siblings, ensuring everyone has something extra if needed.
  • Comfortable clothing for family photos if you’ll be included

What I Provide

You don’t need to worry about props, wraps, or accessories. I provide:

  • A selection of wraps, blankets and textured fabrics
  • Headbands
  • Baskets and safe posing props
  • Comfortable parent seating,
  • Climate-controlled setting
  • White noise machine

What You’ll Receive

After your session, the real magic happens in the editing and selection process.

Your Private Gallery

Three weeks after your session, you will receive an email to schedule their design and viewing appointment so we can view your gallery together. You will receive expert guidance on how to best enjoy your images with your family. Signature newborn galleries have 40 images.

Investment Options

After you view your gallery, you’ll choose from à la carte options tailored to your needs, with flexibility built in: the more art you purchase, the more your digital-file cost decreases.

Custom Albums

A tangible way to revisit these moments year after year. Albums are crafted with premium papers, professional binding, and custom layouts that tell your baby’s story from cover to cover.

Framed Wall Art

Whether it’s a gallery wall or a feature piece above the nursery, professional printing and design-visualization tools ensure your portraits look stunning for decades.

Digital Collections

High-resolution digital files are perfect for sharing with loved ones near and far. And because I value tangible products, as you invest more in artwork, your digital investment becomes more accessible.

Print Quality Matters

All prints and products are created using archival-quality materials from professional labs. Your images are printed to last a lifetime. Colors remain vibrant, papers don’t yellow, and quality stays exceptional for generations.

Investment and Packages

Professional newborn photography in Farmington and Hartford is not just a session, it’s an investment in your family’s legacy.

Session Fees

Session fees cover the time, talent, and expertise that go into creating your portraits, as well as complimentary hair and makeup for mom and a credit towards an heirloom album.

  • Planning appointment that includes discussing your session, your must-have portraits, color palettes, etc
  • 2-3 hours of shooting time
  • Use of all props, wraps, and accessories
  • Professional editing of selected images

Product Collections

After viewing your gallery, you’ll have the opportunity to select from various product collections that fit your needs and budget. Most families invest between $1,500 to 3,500 for their complete portrait experience, including digital files and printed products.

Why This Investment Matters

You’ll spend countless hours buying things your baby will outgrow, but these portraits will stand the test of time. They’ll be displayed at graduation parties, wedding receptions and passed down generations. The value? Priceless memories preserved forever.

Parent Portraits

Many parents are hesitant to be photographed during those early postpartum weeks, but these images become some of the most treasured. I use flattering angles, careful posing, and expert editing to ensure you feel beautiful in your photos. Remember: your children will treasure images of you holding them, regardless of whether you feel camera-ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my session last?

Typically 2–3 hours, allowing plenty of breaks. Lifestyle sessions may be slightly shorter, while studio sessions with multiple family combinations may take the full three hours.

Do I need to bring anything?

I provide wraps, props, and accessories, but you’re welcome to include personal items for a meaningful touch. Bring feeding supplies, extra diapers, and any special items you’d like incorporated.

What if my baby doesn’t sleep?

Awake images are just as beautiful! Sessions are flexible and baby-led. Some of the most striking portraits feature bright, alert eyes looking at the camera.

Can siblings or pets be included?

Absolutely! Including siblings (and even pets) makes your session even more special. I recommend bringing siblings dressed and ready at the beginning of the session while they’re most cooperative. Pets must be well trained. If you would like your pet to be part of your session, I recommend an at home session.

What should parents wear?

For studio sessions, neutral colors and simple styles photograph best. Avoid busy patterns, logos, or clothing that’s too tight or uncomfortable. For lifestyle sessions, wear what makes you feel comfortable in your own home. Khakis or chinos and a soft sweater often work beautifully.

When will I receive my images?

About 3 weeks after your session, you will receive an email asking you to schedule your design and ordering appointment. This is when you can view your gallery. Galleries will get delivered as soon as the end of their appointment. Printed artwork is ready 6 to 8 weeks later.

What if my baby has jaundice, baby acne, or cradle cap?

Don’t worry! Minor skin concerns are easily addressed in editing. However, if your baby has significant jaundice requiring phototherapy, it may be worth postponing your session by a few days for your baby’s health and comfort.

Do you offer maternity photography?

Yes! Many families book both maternity and newborn sessions together. Maternity sessions are typically scheduled during your third trimester (around 28-32 weeks). I offer collective memberships that include 3 or 4 signature sessions. These are perfect for those who want to include a maternity session and milestone sessions and want to take advantage of additional savings.

What’s your cancellation policy?

Life with a newborn is unpredictable. If you need to reschedule due to illnesses or postpartum complications, simply contact me as soon as possible and we’ll find a new date that works. Your session fee holds your spot and moves with you to the new date.

How do I book my session?

Contact me through the website. We’ll discuss your due date, vision for the session, and answer any questions you have. I’ll send you a booking agreement and invoice, and once those are completed, your session is officially reserved!
